Specialized Courses

Through the years, Piedmont TEC offered specialized courses for particular segments of employees working in local industry.  An example of this type of instruction was the course “Proofreading, Editing, and Revising for Monsanto’s Secretaries,” offered in 1978.  The objective of the course stated that “…each secretary will be able to demonstrate her ability to proofread, edit, and revise given business communications.”  The course included chapters on grammar, punctuation, the writing of numbers, and the composition of effective business letters.  One section warned the secretaries to avoid trite expressions, or clichés, such as “We regret to inform you that…” and “…at your earliest convenience.”  Though the times have changed, and we no longer even use the term “secretary”, this advice is still relevant in 2016!
