Excitement was in the air on Sunday, October 23, 1966. The Piedmont TEC campus was officially dedicated at 3 p.m. on this date. Robert McNair, Governor of South Carolina, delivered the keynote address, and many local and state dignitaries and supporters were present for the occasion.
As the Abbeville Press and Banner noted in an article about the event, Piedmont TEC had an enrollment of approximately 300 students from the four counties of Greenwood, Abbeville, Saluda, and McCormick. The faculty numbered 11 full-time and 17 part-time instructors for its day and night classes.
The article further stated that the “specially designed modern building of 43,000 square feet” sat on 24 acres in a “growing industrial strip northeast of Greenwood.” The cost for completing the building was over $600,000; that would calculate to around $4,463,000 in 2016.
